Musical Supervisor

John studied orchestral and choral conducting at the University of Huddersfield and the Royal Northern College of Music. He holds MMus in Musicology from King’s College London where he is currently reading for his PhD. He began his career in musical theatre and has been musical director for a long list of prestigious productions. In Germany, he was musical director for Miss Saigon (Musical Hall, Stuttgart) and Starlight Express (Starlighthalle, Bochum).

Theatre includes: in the West End, musical Director and conductor credits on Beautiful and Damned (Lyric), The Drowsy Chaperone (Novello), The King and I (Palladium) The Last Empress (Apollo, Hammersmith), Marguerite (Theatre Royal Haymarket) Les Misérables (Palace), The Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty’s Theatre), Peter Pan (Savoy), The Pirates of Penzance (Savoy), The Producers (Theatre Royal Drury Lane) and Sinatra at the London Palladium. As musical supervisor, he worked on the UK tours of The Producers with Peter Kay and Joe Pasquale, The King and I with Stephanie Powers and Marti Webb, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice and The Poor Soldier (Theatre Royal Bury St. Edmunds), Cameron Mackintosh’s 25th Anniversary UK tour of The Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar starring Tim Minchin and Mel C (arena world tour). He is currently musical supervisor for Cameron Mackintosh’s 25th Anniversary USA tour of The Phantom of the Opera.

Opera includes: conducting Judith Weir’s The Black Spider (Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival), Carmen Jones (Royal Festival Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra), and Carousel (Opera North, Barbican).  He has worked with numerous orchestra in a wide range of concerts, including the Berliner Symphoniker, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Dublin Concert Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Concert Orchestra, Manchester Concert Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish Concert Orchestra and the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera. He is especially known for both conducting and presenting Raymond Gubbay’s Classical Spectacular at the Royal Albert Hall and at a concert arenas throughout the UK and Europe.

Recordings include:  Beautiful and Damned (original London cast DVD), original London cast albums of The Last Empress and Marguerite; The Best of Classical Spectacular Volume 2 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and supervising the recent Jesus Christ Superstar DVD.
