Miss Saigon breaks box office records at Theatre Royal Nottingham.
Cameron Mackintosh
Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Boublil and Schönberg’s ‘MISS SAIGON’ opens at the THEATRE ROYAL NOTTINGHAM next week, and has already taken over £1 million breaking all previous Box Office records at the venue.
This legendary musical looks set to play to packed houses throughout the six week run, which ends on Saturday 1 October.
Jonathan Saville, Head of Sales, Marketing and Development at the Theatre Royal, said “MISS SAIGON is, without doubt, the theatrical event of the year for the East Midlands region. We are ecstatic about the Box Office figures so far, and we are looking forward to welcoming our first audiences next week. Despite unprecedented demand for tickets, good seats are still available at the moment, but I would recommend booking now in order not to miss out!”
This new production of ‘MISS SAIGON’ is the largest touring musical production in the UK, with a company of over 50 actors and musicians.
Set in 1975 during the final days leading up to the American evacuation of Saigon, ‘MISS SAIGON’ is an epic love story about the relationship between an American GI and a young Vietnamese woman.
This exciting new production uses cutting edge visual techniques and a brilliant new set which vividly recreates the streets of Vietnam and Bangkok. The memorable final helicopter flight from the roof of the American Embassy is achieved in a spectacular visual fashion, which a review in The Sunderland Echo, in January 2005, described as “amazing…. a helicopter which really feels as if it is flying over the stalls”. When the production opened in Plymouth, in July 2004, it was immediately hailed by the Western Morning News as “better than ever – a theatrical night to remember” and has since received public and critical acclaim at every venue most recently breaking box office records at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
This new production has been so successful that it will soon be opening in Korea, Australasia and South America.
‘MISS SAIGON’ has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg with lyrics by Richard Maltby Jnr and Alain Boublil, adapted from original French lyrics by Alain Boublil.
This new production has been co-directed by Mitchell Lemsky and Laurence Conner. Bob Avian’s original brilliant choreography has been restaged by Maggie Goodwin with additional new choreography by Geoffrey Garratt. Musical supervision is by Daniel Bowling and musical direction by James Dodgson. Designer Adrian Vaux has created a new vibrant set which brilliantly unites with Andreane Neofitou’s original costumes. New lighting by Jenny Kagan and sound by Nick Lidster with William D Brohn’s award winning orchestrations.
The internationally famous illustrator Gerald Scarfe has created his own inimitable take on the famous show stopping production number, ’The American Dream’.
Sixteen years ago Cameron Mackintosh premiered Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s epic musical ‘MISS SAIGON’ at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane and overnight it became a legend, running in London and on Broadway for over 10 years and in major capital cities around the world, becoming one of the most successful musicals in modern history.
Since its London premiere in 1989, ‘MISS SAIGON’ has become the third most successful musical in the history of British theatre and the longest running show ever to play Drury Lane. It has been performed in 18 countries, in nine different languages, has won 29 awards and been seen by over 31 million people worldwide. To date it has grossed over £950 million at the box office around the world.
